Foal Project

It's A Foal's Life- Watch a foal develop and grow

The beginning of this foal's story starts at Rocking N Boot Ranch, RNB, owned by Sandy and John Jones. They have raised horses in Eastern Washington on Boyer Mountain for more than thirty years.

The foal's sire (father) is Partner in Crime, "Partner", has fathered more than one hundred registered foals in the past twelve years. He is an 18 year old stallion who has been the basis of RNB's breeding programs for many years. Partner was born on February 25, 1986. He was shown at halter while he was a yearling for a very short amount of time.

The foal's dam (mother) is Fast Lane, "Laney", a 19 year old blanketed red dun mare. Laney has already had two foals and this will be her third. She had one foal in 1989 and the second was born in in 1999 and has since become a granddam (grandma). She was shown in halter and performance before joining the RNB herd.

Both the dam and sire were born at Silver State Appaloosas in Carlin, Nevada. Since coming to live with the Jones' they have become an important part of their breeding program.. The foal is due to be born on March 18th, 2005. All mares carry their foals about 340 days before foaling (giving birth).

In the beginning...

Click the link below to follow the development of a foal before it is born. There you will see how a few cells, that are invisible to eye, become the foal you can see playing near it's watchful mare. You will also gain an idea of how big the foal is inside the mare at different stages of development.

Just thought I would send you a quick update on "Lanie". She is now at 352 days but think things may happen in the next day or so. Hopefully you will hear from us very soon and I may get a bit of sleep before the next arrivals. :-)

The Fast Lane foaled last night 3-28-05 at approximately 10 P.M.. Nice easy birth and had a dun, blanketed colt. "Lanie" passed her afterbirth within an hour, foal was up on his feet within a half an hour and nursing at about an hour after birth. Strong very pretty foal. I will send off some photos this evening and more tomorrow when vet is here to look him over and draw blood for IGg test to make sure his immune system is up to par.

We have decided on a name for the new colt--DUN CHANGIN' LANES. "Dunny" is doing great today. I think is going to be a fun colt for this project as he loves people and has quite the personality.

April 10, 2005

Dunny got his first leading lesson today. We had to start indoors because of the rain.

The sun came out and so did we.

Almost Dun...

Freedom at last!

Time for a well deserved snack.

Out to pasture with my mom and the other foals and mares--June 2005

I'm about 2 1/2 months old now. Look how much I've grown.

Looking for fun.

Where are my friends?

There you are.

Did you miss me Mom?

I shouldn't have gone into those stickers.

Is It a bear?

I think I got him this time.

Wow! What did they put on my face. It's funny to look through, but it keeps those pesky flies off!
